Welcome to Independence!

Unreturned library book leads to woman’s arrest, really? I’m not quite sure if this falls under the category of irony as the book this lady kept is about getting people to write. If it was about getting people to read, then most definitely call it ironic, in this situation, I dunno. But it is definitely not a good way to encourage people to use your local library and read books (which for you bibliophiles and bookworms is a great way to save some big bucks in the current economic situation, library cards are the best!). Can you imagine being the arresting officer for this?

PB+J+Salmonella!

January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Fun story, so I clicked on the abc story about peanut butter crackers being pulled off the shelves because of a nationwide salmonella outbreak. The short ad before the story? For Reese’s peanut butter cups. Worst pairing ever.

Hipsters trying to corner the (ironic) rap market

August 11, 2008 · 5 Comments

If these girls were cool, they’d reference Julie Ruin, or at the very least Le Tigre, who did the valley girl rapping over electronic beats first. Anyway, words do not describe how much this video/song makes me want to die. This video is just viral marketing for American Apparel, right?

this is what a hipster looks like

July 21, 2008 · 3 Comments

it’s weird that adbusters just defined themselves…perhaps that means that this will be their final issue! alas, i fear not.

i dunno, hipsters. i think it’s more of a differential diagnosis/flow chart:

short shorts –> male –> not from the past (e.g. 70s basketball superstar) –> made them yourself? –> worn ‘ironically’ -> congratulations, you’re a hipster!

also, i think that anyone who does things ironically is a hipster. but the difference between ironic and non-ironic is so slim these days. also, people who are doing things ironically but actually have neither a sense of irony nor of humor, these are definitely hipsters. people who show genuine emotions about things are generally not hipsters. unless they are so tragically sincere that it turns out to be impossibly ironic, they they are totally hipsters (see: Ira Glass. upon close inspection of Mr. Glass’ Wikipedia bio, he concentrated in semiotics, which is like getting a BA in Hipster. oh, that is boldly Brown. i love Ira Glass, though.).

here is a picture of a group of hipsters in their natural habitat. but these ones are easy to spot. it’s the non-symptomatic cases that are difficult. jaime, are you living in their part of new york yet?

Send-up or Stereotype?

July 15, 2008 · 3 Comments

So, first of all, let’s just take Mills Liberty and Amendment the First as givens.  They have no place here, as we’re talking relevance, not rights.

Looking at this cover, I’m seeing the stereotypes, but not the satire.  Maybe I need the special glasses that come with the magazine?

New Yorker Cover

Fist Jab

What I’m thinking is that we’ve lost our sense of language, and have now collectively resorted to using the “Alanis Morrisette Method” to determine the meanings of words.  Isn’t it ironic?  A traffic jam when you’re already late is about as ironic as visualizing a litany of media stereotypes in one neat, cartoonish package is satricial.  Where is the spoof?  The meta-analysis?  At least we have most of the greatest hits in one place now, so cataloging, I will give you.  However, this cover appears to be distinctly non-ironic and non-satircial. It’s a job more suited to Photoshop and LOL Prez. (Does LOL Prez exist?  Did I just make that up? Ok, no, apparently it was already invented.)

Well, really looking forward to the McCain cover, which will probably involve him being super old in the White House while demonstrating how he doesn’t know how to use a computer and yelling his head off at reporters while riding around on a Rascal labeled “Straight Talk Express” with “Waterloo” playing in the background.  Will someone please photoshop that for me?

PS: Sorry Alanis! Love you, call me…
